Don’t toss out that black sweater just yet. There are easy, effective ways to deal with annoying dandruff, which can be caused by everything from a dry, overly oily, or under-shampooed scalp to skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or fungus. Treatments like the ones below make it simple to control both the side effects and the underlying causes of the problem.

Ginger–Tea Tree Scalp Tonic

YIELD: 1 TREATMENT
STORAGE: NOT RECOMMENDED
TIME: 20 MINUTES

Ginger’s anti-inflammatory action eases the itching associated with dandruff. Olive oil imparts natural moisture to dry, flaky skin. Tea tree essential oil lends a hand by killing fungus.

1 palm-sized piece of fresh ginger root, peeled

1 tablespoon olive oil

2 drops tea tree essential oil

1.Use a garlic press or juicer to extract as much juice from the ginger root as you can. If using a garlic press, grate the ginger before pressing it.

2.In a small bowl, mix the juice, olive oil, and tea tree essential oil together.

3.Wet your hair and apply the entire remedy to the scalp.

4.Massage gently.

5.Leave the treatment in place for 15 minutes.

6.When finished, rinse your hair thoroughly with cool water. Follow up with your favorite shampoo and conditioner.

7.Repeat this treatment 2 to 3 times weekly until the dandruff is gone. If you use a hair dryer, avoid exposing your scalp to high heat, as it slows the healing process.
