FACE AND HAIR CARE

SPLIT ENDS

Images

While the only way to get rid of split ends for good is to have them trimmed off, there are some easy ways to smooth them down so your hair looks less frazzled. Speed the healing time of dry, damaged locks by avoiding hot styling tools, salt water, and chemicals such as those found in home hair-color kits. They make the problem worse—and your herbal remedies have to work twice as hard!

Geranium–Honey Hair Repair

YIELD: 1 TREATMENT
STORAGE: NOT RECOMMENDED
TIME: 20 MINUTES

With honey and olive oil to moisturize, this nourishing treatment also contains geranium essential oil to strengthen hair. Use between haircuts to fortify strands and preserve that healthy, freshly cut salon look.

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 tablespoon honey

3 drops geranium essential oil

1.In a small glass bowl, combine the olive oil and honey.

2.Microwave on low power for 15 seconds.

3.Stir the honey and olive oil together. If not quite warm enough, repeat step 2.

4.Add the geranium essential oil.

5.Dampen your hair and apply the entire treatment.

6.Cover your head with a disposable shower cap, then wrap it with a towel.

7.Leave the hair repair in place for 10 to 15 minutes, then wash, condition, and style as usual.

8.Repeat once or twice weekly.

Rosemary–Aloe Vera Leave–In Conditioner

YIELD: ABOUT 1 CUP
STORAGE: PLASTIC SQUEEZE BOTTLE
TIME: 10 MINUTES

This intensely moisturizing aloe vera and oil blend smoothes split ends by locking in hydration and reversing damaged strands. While fresh aloe vera is preferable in many preparations, this recipe calls for pre-packaged gel to prevent spoilage.

¼ cup coconut oil

½ cup alcohol-free aloe vera gel

¼ cup argan oil

12 drops rosemary essential oil

1.In a small saucepan over low heat, warm the coconut oil until melted.

2.Combine the aloe vera gel, argan oil, and coconut oil in a small bowl.

3.Whisk thoroughly to ensure all the moisturizers are thoroughly incorporated.

4.Add the rosemary essential oil and whisk again.

5.Transfer the conditioner to a plastic squeeze bottle. An empty, clean shampoo bottle works well.

6.After washing and conditioning your hair, rinse thoroughly and apply a small amount of this leave-in conditioner to the ends.

7.Dry your hair naturally if possible, then style as usual.

8.Use daily for best results. Keep in the shower.
