You don’t need to book expensive salon appointments to get gorgeous nails. DIY spa treatments contain many of the same natural ingredients you find in high-end products. Plus, make-your-own lets you doctor up the recipes to fit your pampering tastes. Put these remedies in your weekly routine for healthy hands and nails, no manicure required.

Pampering Chamomile – Lavender Scrub

YIELD: 6 OUNCES
STORAGE: GLASS JAR
TIME: 20 MINUTES

If your hands are feeling dry and looking overworked, treat them to a quick pick-me-up. This thick, rich sugar scrub exfoliates and moisturizes, leaving skin feeling refreshed. Try it on dry feet, knees, and elbows too.

6 tablespoons sugar

1 ounce beeswax, grated

2 ounces organic olive oil

4 drops chamomile essential oil

2 drops lavender essential oil

1.Place the sugar in a small jar.

2.In a double boiler over low heat, add the beeswax and olive oil. Stir gently until the beeswax is completely melted.

3.Remove from the heat and cool for 2 minutes.

4.Pour the olive oil and beeswax blend into the jar on top of the sugar, and allow the mixture to cool for 5 minutes.

5.Stir in the chamomile and lavender essential oils and cap the jar tightly.

6.Gently massage your hands with 1 teaspoon of the scrub for at least 1 minute, before rinsing with warm water.

7.Follow up with your favorite moisturizer.

8.Use 3 times weekly for soft, smooth hands. Store in a cook, dark place.

Aloe Vera and Geranium Nail Soak

YIELD: 1 TREATMENT
STORAGE: NOT RECOMMENDED
TIME: 15 MINUTES

With protein-rich gelatin to strengthen nails naturally, this soothing soak also contains aloe vera and geranium for soft, smooth skin.

1 tablespoon unflavored gelatin

½ cup boiling water

1 tablespoon alcohol-free aloe vera gel

4 drops geranium essential oil

1.In a wide bowl, combine the gelatin and water. With a spoon or whisk, stir until the gelatin dissolves completely.

2.Cool until comfortably warm.

3.Stir in the aloe vera gel and geranium essential oil.

4.Immerse your hands into the bowl and let them soak for 5 to 10 minutes.

5.When the water cools, remove your hands and pat them dry with a towel. Follow up with your favorite moisturizer.

6.Repeat once weekly for strong nails that resist cracking and peeling.

Lavender–Sage Hand Salve

YIELD: 8 OUNCES
STORAGE: GLASS JAR OR TIN
TIME: 15 MINUTES

Indulge in this rich salve to comfort and heal dry, cracked skin. Whether your hands are overworked or affected by an arid environment, this soothing remedy brings instant relief.

2 ounces coconut oil

5 ounces organic olive oil

1 ounce beeswax, grated

6 drops lavender essential oil

6 drops sage essential oil

1.In a double boiler, add the coconut oil, olive oil, and beeswax over low heat.

2.When the coconut oil and beeswax melt completely, use a whisk or fork to blend, and remove from the heat.

3.Stir in the lavender and sage essential oils.

4.Transfer to a jar or tin.

5.Cool completely before capping with a tight-fitting lid.

6.Apply a thin layer to clean hands.

7.Use each evening before bed for best results, and apply at other times as needed. Keep in a cool, dark place.
