PART 3. THE REMEDIES

BODY CARE

PSORIASIS

Images

Whether caused by an emotional trauma, stress, abnormal liver function, or some other contributing factor, the symptoms—and discomfort—of psoriasis are the same. At its worst, the condition leads to reddish lesions topped by silvery scales of skin that pile up before flaking off, leading to severe itching and bleeding. Use herbal treatments to manage both the skin eruptions and related side effects when psoriasis begins to flare up.

Goldenseal–St. John’s Wort Salve

YIELD: ABOUT 8 OUNCES
STORAGE: GLASS JAR OR TIN
TIME: 15 MINUTES, PLUS 2 WEEKS BREWING

Make this soothing salve ahead of time so you have some on hand when psoriasis flares up. Apply daily during flare-ups to ease pain, swelling, and redness.

1 tablespoon dried goldenseal root

5 ounces organic olive oil

2 ounces coconut oil

1 ounce beeswax, grated

10 drops St. John’s wort essential oil

3 drops lavender essential oil

3 drops tea tree essential oil

1.In a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid, combine the dried goldenseal root and the olive oil.

2.Cap the jar tightly and place it in a sunny window for 2 weeks. Every day or two, swirl the jar for 10 seconds.

4.Add the coconut oil and beeswax to the double boiler.

5.Over low heat, stir gently until the coconut oil and beeswax melt completely.

6.Remove from the heat and cool for 2 minutes.

7.Add the St. John’s wort, lavender, and tea tree essential oils and stir again.

8.Carefully transfer to a glass jar or tin.

9.Let the salve cool completely before capping tightly.

10.Using your fingertips, apply a thin layer of salve to affected areas.

11.Repeat 2 to 3 times daily while symptoms are present. Keep in a cool, dark place.
