COMMON AILMENTS

FLATULENCE

Images

Flatulence may be normal, but that doesn’t mean it’s a welcomed condition, especially when accompanied by unpleasant symptoms. These treatments bring relief within a few hours for occasional gas and bloating. Seek medical treatment if the problem is constant or accompanied by abdominal pain and swelling, as it may be a sign of an underlying illness.

Ginger–Clove Infusion

YIELD: 1 CUP
STORAGE: NOT RECOMMENDED
TIME: 10 MINUTES

Digestive systems love ginger and clove. Together they reduce gas in the digestive tract and ease flatulence symptoms. Unfortunately this treatment won’t work instantly, but it is reliable.

2 tablespoons fresh ginger root, peeled and grated

4 whole cloves

1¼ cups water

Honey or stevia (optional)

1.In a small saucepan, add the ginger and cloves to the water. Bring to a boil.

2.Reduce the heat to medium-low and let the infusion simmer for 10 minutes.

3.Strain into a mug, using the back of a spoon to press the liquid from the herbs before discarding them.

4.Add honey or stevia, if desired, and drink.

Peppermint Tea

YIELD: 1 CUP
STORAGE: NOT RECOMMENDED
TIME: 15 MINUTES

Sip peppermint tea after your last meal of the day if flatulence tends to be a problem for you. Easy to make with fresh or dried peppermint or a tea bag, it makes a good post-meal remedy for stopping gas before it starts.

1 tablespoon dried peppermint, 3 tablespoons fresh peppermint, or 1 peppermint teabag

1 cup boiling water

Honey or stevia (optional)

1.In a mug, combine the peppermint and the boiling water.

2.Steep the herbs for 15 minutes.

3.Add honey or stevia, if desired.

4.Drink.

Peppermint–Clary Sage Abdominal Massage Blend

YIELD: 4 OUNCES
STORAGE: KEEP IN A COOL, DRY PLACE
TIME: 5 MINUTES

Massaging the abdomen soothes nerves, alleviates upset stomach, and improves the digestive process, helping to put a stop to gastric disturbances. This blend is ideal for times when you’ve overindulged in rich food or had too much to drink.

4 ounces organic olive oil

28 drops peppermint essential oil

16 drops clary sage essential oil

12 drops caraway essential oil

1.In a dark-colored glass bottle, combine all of the ingredients. Shake well to blend.

2.Apply 1 teaspoon of the blend to your hands and rub them together.

3.Using firm pressure, massage your abdomen, beginning under the ribcage and working counter-clockwise around the entire abdominal area, rubbing in small circles as you go.

4.Continue the process for up to 5 minutes.

5.You may notice more gas for a few minutes as things work their way out of your system. You should feel more like yourself again within 10 to 15 minutes of ending the massage. Use as often as needed.
