These soothing remedies knock out discomfort just as fast as an over-the-counter lozenge, sans the sugar and preservatives, regardless of the pain trigger. Use them alone to bring relief, or combine them with treatments for other symptoms as part of a complete natural healing plan for sickness.

Licorice Infusion with Slippery Elm

YIELD: 1 CUP
STORAGE: NOT RECOMMENDED
TIME: 15 MINUTES

Licorice and slippery elm powder combine with honey and lemon to coat your throat, bringing comfort quickly.

1 tablespoon dried licorice root, chopped

2 teaspoons slippery elm powder

1 tablespoon honey

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1¼ cups water

1.In a small saucepan, combine all the ingredients.

2.Bring to a boil.

3.Reduce the heat to medium-low and allow the herbs to simmer for 10 minutes.

4.Strain into a mug, using the back of a spoon to press the liquid from the herbs before discarding them.

5.Drink 2 to 3 cups daily while recovering.

Ginger–Cayenne Gargle

TIME: 5 MINUTES

Ginger and cayenne combine with lemon and honey to relieve your sore throat, bringing instant relief from the pain.

¼ cup warm water

1 tablespoon honey

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1 pinch cayenne pepper

1 pinch ground ginger

1.In a cup, combine all the ingredients, stirring to blend thoroughly.

2.Gargle with 1 tablespoon of the solution at a time, using the entire amount.

3.Repeat 2 to 3 times daily while recovering.
