Cleaners full of chemicals aren’t necessarily the best defense against household dirt (especially when they add more toxins to your environment). These natural cleaning solutions work brilliantly on kitchens and bathroom surfaces, including countertops, sinks, and bathtubs. Their strong herbal ingredients cut grease and grime, kill germs, and leave your home sparkling clean. Best of all, they smell like a garden party.

Lemon–Eucalyptus Cleanser and Disinfectant

YIELD: 16 OUNCES
STORAGE: PLASTIC SPRAY BOTTLE
TIME: 5 MINUTES

This simple, inexpensive spray is tough on dirt while being easy on household surfaces. It kills germs naturally, leaving a fresh, sunny fragrance behind.

2 cups hot water

2 teaspoons borax

1 teaspoon washing soda

8 drops lemon essential oil

4 drops eucalyptus essential oil

1.In a spray bottle, combine all the ingredients.

2.Cap tightly and shake well to mix.

3.Spray onto soiled surfaces and wipe with a rag or paper towel. For heavy soil, allow the cleanser to penetrate for 1 minute before wiping up.

4.Store in a cool, dry place between uses.

Rosemary–Lemon Soft Scrub

TIME: 5 MINUTES

Eliminate bathtub rings and other sticky, grimy messes with this nonabrasive scrub that leaves surfaces shining. Rosemary and lemon essential oils infuse the room with a refreshingly clean scent.

8 ounces borax

8 drops rosemary essential oil

8 drops lemon essential oil

8 ounces castile soap

1.In a large bowl, place the borax, rosemary essential oil, and lemon essential oil. Using a whisk, stir to blend.

2.Add the castile soap. Using a sturdy spoon, stir until a thick paste forms.

3.With a funnel, transfer the scrub to a plastic squeeze bottle.

4.Apply about a teaspoon of soft scrub to a sponge or brush and rub onto soiled areas.

5.Scrub vigorously to eliminate grime.

6.Store in a cool, dark place.
