YEAST INFECTION

If you’ve ever had a yeast infection, you’re probably all too familiar with the accompanying itchiness, soreness, and smelly white discharge. Usually caused by a fungus called Candida albicans,yeast infections thrive on sugars that are delivered via the bloodstream. Shorten their duration by cutting back on sugar while giving these natural remedies a chance to work. Eating garlic and taking probiotics can help, too.

Garlic Suppository

YIELD: 1 TREATMENT

TIME: OVERNIGHT

Put garlic up there? Um, yes. This truly alternative remedy is one that works best during the beginning stage of a yeast infection when the herb’s antibacterial forces can get to work. Use it as soon as you notice itching.

1 clove fresh garlic, peeled

1.Wrap a clove of garlic in a piece of gauze.

2.Encase the garlic by tying the open end of the gauze securely with a piece of thread. Leave 3 to 4 inches of thread hanging from the suppository.

3.Insert the suppository into your vagina at bedtime. Remove and discard it in the morning.

4.Repeat the treatment for 3 to 5 nights in a row. If symptoms worsen or fail to improve, see your doctor for something stronger.

Tea Tree Douche

YIELD: 1 TREATMENT
STORAGE: NOT RECOMMENDED
TIME: 10 MINUTES

Tea tree essential oil and apple cider vinegar work in tandem to greatly reduce the vagina’s yeast population. Use this treatment as soon as you notice symptoms. This remedy requires the purchase of a douche—a rubber bulb with a smoothed, curved nozzle—that you can find online.

2 quarts warm distilled water

3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

2 drops tea tree essential oil

1.In a pitcher or large jar, combine all the ingredients.

2.Transfer to a douche and use per the manufacturer’s instructions.

3.Repeat twice daily for up to 5 days until symptoms are gone. If symptoms worsen or fail to improve, see your doctor for something stronger.

Lavender–Myrrh Bath

STORAGE: NOT RECOMMENDED
TIME: 20 MINUTES

Lavender, myrrh, and tea tree essential oils are potent antifungal agents, and coconut oil contains fatty acids that that work against yeast. This bath helps to relieve discomfort while imparting aromatherapy benefits. Just relaxing for a while can help you feel better and, as an added benefit, your skin will feel soft and smooth when you emerge from the bath.

1 tablespoon coconut oil

10 drops lavender essential oil

6 drops myrrh essential oil

4 drops tea tree essential oil

1.Draw a warm bath.

2.Add the coconut oil and essential oils.

3.Spend 15 to 20 minutes in the bath with the lower half of your body fully submerged.

4.After getting out of the bath, dry your body, and especially the genital area, well.

5.Enjoy this bath treatment 1 to 2 times each day while the infection persists. It is an excellent complement to other treatments.
