CONSTIPATION

If you’ve ever devoured an entire cheese plate, you know that no matter how healthy you are, nearly everyone gets constipated at some time. Uncomfortable and frustrating, constipation occurs when waste becomes difficult to pass. If you strain during bowel movements, have hard stools, or have two or fewer bowel movements over the course of a week, give these treatments a try. Increasing water intake, eating more fiber, and exercising can help, too.

Ginger–Fennel Infusion

YIELD: 1 CUP
STORAGE: NOT RECOMMENDED
TIME: 20 MINUTES

Ginger and fennel increase blood flow to the intestinal tract, and gently alleviate constipation. This remedy may ease other gastrointestinal symptoms, too, like gas, cramps, or bloating.

2 tablespoons fresh ginger, peeled and grated

1 tablespoon fennel seeds

1 tablespoon honey

1¼ cups water

1.In a small saucepan, add the ginger, fennel, and honey to the water. Bring to a boil.

2.Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer the herbs for 15 minutes.

3.Strain into a mug, using the back of a spoon to press the liquid from the herbs before discarding them.

4.Drink 2 to 3 cups daily while constipated.

Images This infusion has a spicy flavor that some find overpowering. If it seems too strong, mix it with a cup of water or apple juice before drinking the entire dose.

Chamomile–Rose Hip Infusion

YIELD: 1 CUP
STORAGE: NOT RECOMMENDED
TIME: 15 MINUTES

This wonder works while you sleep! This stimulating trio of chamomile, rose hips, and slippery elm activate the digestive tract, bringing relief from constipation as you get your Zzzs.

1 tablespoon dried chamomile flowers

1 tablespoon dried rose hips, chopped

2 teaspoons slippery elm powder

1¼ cups water

1.In a small saucepan, add the chamomile, rose hips, and slippery elm powder to the water. Bring to a boil.

2.Reduce the heat and simmer the herbs for 10 minutes.

3.Strain into a mug, using the back of a spoon to press the liquid from the herbs before discarding them.

4.Drink this infusion before bed.

Images In severe cases of constipation, drink up to four cups of the infusion beginning late in the afternoon. You should have relief by morning.
