BREASTFEEDING RECOMMENDATION: Limited Human Data—Probably Compatible

PREGNANCY SUMMARY

There is no evidence that thiazide diuretics are teratogenic. However, diuretics are not recommended for the treatment of gestational hypertension–preeclampsia because of the maternal hypovolemia characteristic of this disease.

FETAL RISK SUMMARY

Methyclothiazide is a member of the thiazide class of diuretics (see Chlorothiazide). Reproduction studies in rats and rabbits at doses up to about 20 times the maximum recommended human dose did not observe any evidence of impaired fertility or fetal harm (1).
