COMMON AILMENTS

HEMORRHOIDS

Images

Hemorrhoids form when excess pressure is placed on the veins inside the anal canal or near the opening of the anus. This can happen during pregnancy, or it can happen because of straining due to constipation or diarrhea. Use these herbal remedies to bring relief. See your doctor if symptoms worsen or fail to improve.

Soothing Witch Hazel–Geranium Wipes

YIELD: 30 WIPES
STORAGE: GLASS JAR OR RESEALABLE PLASTIC CONTAINER
TIME: 5 MINUTES

The incredible anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic, and antihemorrhagic forces in these wipes shrink swollen tissue, banish itching, and temper the burning associated with hemorrhoids.

¼ cup alcohol-free witch hazel extract

10 drops geranium essential oil

30 cotton cosmetic pads

1.In a jar or resealable plastic container, combine the witch hazel extract and geranium essential oil.

2.Swirl the container for 10 seconds to blend.

3.Stack the cotton cosmetic pads in the container.

4.Cover tightly and invert to soak the pads.

5.After bathing or showering, apply a pad to the anus.

6.Press lightly for 5 to 10 seconds to ensure the liquid contacts the irritated area.

7.Repeat as often as needed to obtain relief. Keep in a cool, dark place.

Plantain–Prunella Salve with Lavender

YIELD: ABOUT 8 OUNCES
STORAGE: GLASS JAR OR TIN
TIME: 48 HOURS FOR BREWING

The bad news is that this recipe takes 2 days to formulate, but the upside is that using it brings rapid relief. Make a big batch in advance to streamline healing and keep it on hand for treating minor wounds and burns, too.

7 ounces organic olive oil

4 tablespoons dried plantain leaves, crushed

4 tablespoons dried prunella, crushed

1 tablespoon beeswax, grated

20 drops lavender essential oil

1.In a jar with a tight-fitting lid, combine the olive oil, plantain leaves, and prunella.

2.Cap tightly and put in a warm place for 48 hours.

3.Strain the olive oil into a double boiler, using the back of a spoon to press as much oil as possible from the herbs before discarding them.

4.Add the grated beeswax. Over low heat, stir until the wax melts completely.

5.Remove from the heat and cool for 2 minutes.

6.Add the lavender essential oil.

7.Pour the salve into the jar or tin and cool completely before capping tightly.

8.After bathing or showering, apply a thin layer to the anus.

9.Repeat as often as needed to obtain relief.
